Two Questions for You

So, we are on our retreat weekend, discussing all kinds of writerly things. One, is to have a list, or not. I’m talking about the ’email list’ the ‘thing’ that everyone says you have to have. As you’ve read by now, I’m having a little trouble getting MailChimp to work. And it’s not their fault, it’s all mine.

But during our discussions last night, we have read and heard pros and cons to this ‘list’ business and honestly, we don’t see the difference between an email showing up in your inbox vs a blog post. I don’t have anything to sell yet, except eventual books, and don’t really have anything to put or say in a newsletter.

So, question 1 is:

Do you receive a lot of newsletters?

If so, do you like them? Do you read them? How many is too many? Do you get so many emails from people and blogs you follow that sometimes you just delete them because your inbox is full and you don’t have time to read them all?

Question 2 is:

Do you see the difference in getting a newsletter vs a blog post?

Are you annoyed when every newsletter has a sales pitch in it? Maybe all of them don’t. What do you like in a newsletter? Do you want both a post and a newsletter or just one or the other?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this as I get this site going and figure this out. I think my problem is I don’t want to overwhelm readers and stress myself out trying to do too much. There is a fine line between being informative and being obnoxious.

Still figuring things out.
